Ice caps and polar bears

In august 2007, me and Christiane were on a cruise with the course “Arctic Marine Biology”. The boat was Jan Mayen and we went up to do a little student research on the north polar ice sheet which was located at about 80 and a half degrees latitude, a bit north of Spitsbergen. There were some floes, but the polar ice was largely in one large sheet. Suddenly, there was no more open water, just an icy landscape as far as you could see.

It was a strange yet nice experience and the icescape became quite haunting when the fog came rolling in. When we were not out setting up amphipode traps or doing other things on the ice, we could enjoy the occasional polar bear guest from the safety of the boat. It was then I recorded a movie of a visiting female (I think) who was interested in some of the traps we’d put out. Actually, I forgot about this movie, but Christiane rediscovered it on youtube. Seems I had uploaded it there, then forgotten about it. Oh well.

So here, I present it to you -- the reader. My own polar bear film from youtube!

I love the new layout! The video rocks, takes me right back to those glorious two weeks on Jan Mayen. Funny to see how scantily dressed I was in that video; just pyjama pants and a thin shirt under the jacket. Must’ve been in the middle of the night :)
